Peace Symposium in Suita City “1970→2025: What is a Harmonious Society?”

— Hosted by Suita City: Reflecting on the Spirit of Expo ‘70 —

On Saturday, June 28, the Peace Symposium “1970→2025: What is a Harmonious Society?” was held at Suita City Culture Hall. Since selecting Switzerland as a partner country under the Cabinet Secretariat’s “Expo International Exchange Program” in fiscal year 2023, Suita City has been actively promoting international exchange projects. Mr. David Braun, Minister-Deputy Head of Mission at the Embassy of Switzerland in Japan, delivered a special address, sharing Swiss perspectives on harmony and peaceful coexistence. In his speech, Mr. Braun emphasized the role of inclusive democracy in fostering dialogue, trust, and a sense of belonging—key elements for building a lasting, harmonious society. The symposium was facilitated by Mr. Keiji Goto, Mayor of Suita City, and featured distinguished speakers: Prof. Akihisa Matsuno (Osaka University), Dr. Akiko Horiba (The Nippon Foundation), and Prof. Kyoko Okumoto (Osaka Jogakuin University). It was a valuable opportunity for citizens to reflect on what a harmonious society means in today’s world.

This symposium, held during the ongoing Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai, is a unique initiative by Suita City, the site of the 1970 Osaka Expo. Drawing inspiration from the 1970 Expo’s theme, “Progress and Harmony for Mankind,” and reflecting on today’s global challenges, the event aims to explore the idea of a “harmonious society.”

Three speakers active in various parts of the world were invited to discuss the realities and background of conflicts, as well as what is needed for conflict resolution. The discussion also included examples from Switzerland, Suita City’s partner country in the Expo international exchange program.
