A Swiss designer is collaborating with local artisans in Arita, to nurture the century-old ceramics tradition of Kyushu.
In January 2023, Swiss designer Carlo Clopath arrived in Arita City, Saga Prefecture, to take part in a 3-month residency program focusing on ceramics. He is learning about the history and culture of Arita and taking inspiration from his surroundings to work on new pieces together with the local craftsmen. A presentation of the prototypes is scheduled in Arita on March 24. In addition, the Embassy of Switzerland asked filmmaker Kohei Yamaguchi to document Carlo's three-month stay in Arita. You can already discover a photographic recount of the project, and a 3-part documentary is also in preparation!
Carlo Clopath was selected by the Vitality.Swiss program to participate to the Creative Residency Arita following selection by a jury of experts. Jury comprised of BIG-GAME design, design director David Glaettli and director of Okro platform Heinz Caflisch. We would like to thank them for their contribution.
