Among the speakers are: Prof. Jörg Huwyler (University of Basel), Dr. Klaus Pollinger (Aenova-Group Ltd), Dr. Kazuhiro Inoue (TOA Pharmaceuticals. The Cantons of Basel-Stadt and Basel-Landschaft and the Toyama Prefecture have been deepening exchanges in the pharmaceutical field, which started out through the exchange between pharmaceutical companies in the regions since 2006. The continued exchanges led to signing of the agreements between Toyama Prefecture and Basel-Stadt as well as Toyama Prefecture and Basel-Landschaft, on the occasion of the visit of the Governor of Toyama Prefecture to Basel in 2009. The agreement aims to promote further exchanges also in the fields of academia, arts and culture. In 2018 the agreement was renewed to include the collaboration in the filed of biotechnology and the joint activities between universities and higher education institutions, leading to today’s ongoing exchanges.

Basel and Toyama are both considered important locations for the pharmaceutical industry, and the universities in Basel and Toyama have long been working together in the field of pharmaceuticals. An example of this is the Toyama-Basel Joint Symposium which has been held every two years since 2010.
