Reimagining Traditional Crafts with Cutting-Edge Technology

Augmented Human • Digital Society & Tradition

Explore how traditional Japanese crafts can be revitalized and transformed through the integration of cutting-edge technology. This event will serve as a platform for exploring the transformative potential of technology in the realm of traditional crafts as part of a global initiative by the Museum für Gestaltung Zürich and Swissnex. By showcasing the pioneering work of Takafumi Matsunaga, and the expertise of thought leaders like Yoichi Ochiai, it will shine a light on how the convergence of tradition and technology can shape a sustainable future for cultural heritage.

In an era defined by rapid change, how can reimagining traditional craftsmanship become a path to preservation? Swissnex in Japan presents “Reimagining Traditional Crafts with Cutting-Edge Technology,” the 6th edition of the Swissnex Window exhibition series. As part of a global initiative led by the Museum für Gestaltung Zürich and Swissnex, this event invites you to witness the powerful fusion of tradition and innovation—unfolding a rich dialogue between culture and technology while reimagining the possibilities of cultural heritage in the 21st century.

At the heart of the event is a screening of Mirage, a mesmerizing CGI (Computer Generated Imagery) short film by Japanese video artist Takafumi Matsunaga. Inspired by katagami—intricately carved paper stencils used in traditional Japanese textile dyeing and preserved in the Museum für Gestaltung Zürich’s collection—Mirage brings these historical patterns to life through dynamic digital storytelling. The result is a captivating blend of memory and imagination that bridges past and future, Japan and Switzerland.

Complementing this artistic vision, Yoichi Ochiai, leading media artist and Director of the Digital Nature Laboratory at the University of Tsukuba, will deliver a keynote presentation. Known for his work at the crossroads of art, science, and technology, Ochiai will share his innovative approach to revitalizing craft traditions using tools like 3D printing, computational design, and augmented reality. His talk will offer compelling insights into how sustainability, cultural relevance, and advanced technology can coexist—and even thrive—together.

Whether you’re passionate about design, technology, or cultural heritage, this event invites you to imagine how traditions can evolve in unexpected, inspiring ways.
