Service robots for elderly

Getting old is hard. Simple activities of daily life get difficult and the quality of life deteriorates as it gets harder to move around, get things, stay connected. You have to rely more and more on assistance of others – family or paid services. For elderly people and those with limited mobility it is vital to stay independently active as long as possible. In the future, robots could provide the physical assistance needed to make this possible. But what are the specific needs in the field of service robotics for elderly people at home or in retirement and nursing homes? The user-centric approach of the Swiss-Japanese project RobotCare gives the robot development the right momentum to ensure that we build safe, useful, accepted, efficient, and fun to use in daily life robots.

The aim of the RobotCare project is the application-centred definition of the user needs and corresponding requirements for the technology, as well as evaluation of the market potential for service robots in elderly care nationally and internationally. We do so by establishing a systematic dialogue between technology developers and the stakeholders of the elderly and healthcare facilities, including care and service staff, management, as well as residents and their families. The dialogue provides us the input to develop brain-inspired AI Technology that makes robots safer, more agile, and more aware of their surroundings, enabling them to become better assistants and companions.
