Expanding the Ties between Chiba City and Montreux

On February 16, the Embassy of Switzerland in Japan had the pleasure of welcoming 12 students and their teacher from Kanda University of International Studies (KUIS).

Last December, the students volunteered at the “Swiss Christmas Market 2025 in Makuhari,” held near Kaihin-Makuhari Station. Thanks to the continued efforts of Chiba City, the market has now been held for four consecutive years, offering a valuable opportunity to introduce Swiss culture to the local community.

Through promoting Switzerland at the Switzerland Tourism booth and engaging with visitors, the students deepened their understanding of Swiss culture and demonstrated impressive initiative and hospitality, making excellent use of the language skills they are developing at university. In recognition of their contribution, we invited the volunteers to visit the Embassy.

During the visit, colleagues from the Communications and Culture Section, together with representatives of Switzerland Tourism, welcomed the students and introduced Switzerland’s geography, population, tourism resources, political system, education, and culture. The sister-city partnership between Chiba City and Montreux was also highlighted, underscoring the importance of exchanges at the regional level.

The Q&A session was particularly lively. Students raised thoughtful and concrete questions such as: “How do Swiss people become multilingual?”, “What makes working at an embassy rewarding?”, and “How can one pursue a career at an embassy?” Some questions were even based on prior research into the Embassy’s social media channels, reflecting their strong interest and preparation. The discussion extended well beyond the scheduled 90 minutes and made for a truly engaging and rewarding exchange.

The students’ positive attitude and active engagement left a strong impression on the Embassy. We look forward to the continued development of exchanges between Montreux and Chiba City, and hope that the ties between the two communities will continue to grow.
