Automated Photography

Collaboration Exhibition of the Yebisu International Festival for Art Alternative Visions 2023 ーTechnology?

From February 3 to 19, on the occasion of the Yebisu International Festival for Art Alternative Visions 2023, the Embassy of Switzerland in Japan, together with ECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne, will present Automated Photography at la Maison franco-japonaise, an exhibition resulting from the research project by students and guest lecturers of ECAL Master Photography.

An increasing number of images are produced autonomously by machines for machines with a gradual exclusion of any human intervention. These seeing machines are watching us everywhere: when we access our iPhone, at the entrance of the supermarket, in self-driving cars, at airport security checkpoints, through surveillance in our cities, orbiting the globe with satellites, or flying over war-torn territories with drones. Invisible and omnipresent, the images created by these devices govern our lives and are added to the continuous flow of other photographs that submerge our existence. Automated Photography is a research project developed by the Master Photography at ECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne that addresses this situation by examining the technologies of image production and distribution such as: machine learning, CGI, photogrammetry. An immersive audiovisual exhibition presents critical views and a selection of projects that explore the aesthetic and conceptual potential of automated photography.
